Saltwatermill is based on a strategy that uses the potential threat of salinization (growing amount of salt in ground water) as the basis for a new regional identity along the coast. To address the growing problems of depopulation in the rural landscape we imagined that East-Groningen could be world leader in experimenting and knowledge about salinization. To speed up this transformation we propose to place Saltwatermills: impressive structures based on the very old principle of a ‘Gradierwerk’ - an installation for salt extraction. Just as the old windmill symbolizes the typical Dutch polderlandscape and the modern windmill symbolizes an energylandscape, the Saltwatermill will be a symbol for a new salty landscape.
