Cool Down City

Cool Down City is a green initiative with a modern character. The aim of Cool Down City is to prevent further warming of our cities by stimulating citizens to counteract on global warming themselves. By distributing over 3,000 young trees per year, the city of Rotterdam gains a potential 8.4 hectares of green surface, each year. For Cool Down City we designed a circular pavilion from which all activities will take place; the so-called “tree warehouse. The circular pavilion is intended for the distribution of tree seedlings brought in by involved Rotterdammers and green organizations. Based on the principle of a multi-storey library or a warehouse, the storage spaces are stacked like open floors around a central space. The storage space forms the backdrop for all the activities within the pavilion.

The steel structure is made up of used scaffolding parts, which emphasizes the temporary character and makes it possible to move the depot in the future. The steel frame is covered with a re-used transparent steel mesh. On the first floor, a more closed mesh provides more protection and shade inside the pavilion. The entire depot and pavilion will be covered by a transparent corrugated roof and all rainwater will be collected which can then be reused for watering the trees. Inside the pavilion different multifunctional objects provide a circuit of spaces. A 40ft container forms the constructive basis for the first floor and can be used as lockable storage space. A wide staircase leads visitors upstairs but can also be used as a grandstand for larger meetings and presentations. On the first floor a conditioned glass box serves as a multifunctional interior space; this space can be used as an office, coffee corner or workshop space.
